TS BOB ALLEN

TS Bob Allen is a vessel designed by Colin Mudie and built from money bequeathed by the late Mr Bob Allen a past Chairman of the Square Riggers Club and a prominent supporter of the Sea Cadet Association which administers the Sea Cadet Corps.

Bob Allen has a steel hull and is rigged as a Brig. This is two masts square rigged on both. She weighs 8.5 Tonnes and is 42 foot overall in length with a 9 foot beam and a draught of only 4 foot 3 inches. The masts are 29 foot hight overall a height of 32 feet. She has ten sails overall and a design speed of 6.5 knots on engine and 7 knots on sail. Her twin bilge keels enable her to take the ground if and when required.

Fitted out internally with seating as an instructional area 'Bob Allen' is a day boat though in emergency the crew could sleep overnight. There are three separate watertight compartments each with its own bilge pump. The cockpit is large and all sails can be controlled from there. There are no Ratlines, as the crew are not required to go aloft. All three yards on a mast are lowered to the Deck Level for sail preparation and stowing. Hoisted In their Gear to sail the brig.

The rig and design enable the vessel to be sailed with a Skipper and just four hands. Lifesaving provision is for seven and therefore up to six hands can be taken at a time.

UPDATE ON OWNERSHIP Bob Allen has been acquired by a new Sailing Trust and will operate from a new location yet to be decided.

PROGRAM

12 July 2003 T.S. Bob Allen now Certificated can operate with cadets aboard under the MCA Code for Cateory 4. (20 miles from safe haven in favourable weather and in daylight.)

A new Skipper has been appointed and the Brig has been Weymouth since 27 July 2003, sailing in Weymouth Bay and becoming a part of the Weymouth Sailing Scene..The internal seating is now in place and the Instrumentation is installed.

A re-designed rudder has been fitted and shows improvement over the original rudder.

The Brig has returned from LONDON after doing an Event for London Area. During the voyage she was struck by a squall in the Thames Estuary and was very severely blown about. However she seemed to handle all the swells OK and despite the severe wind was able to continue to Margate, Dover, Brighton where she picked up Training Commander Patrick Balfour and finally motor sailed to Weymouth where she was secured at her mooring.

She was hoisted out to the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Acadamy Park for the Winter.

TS BOB ALLEN has completed her 2003-04 refit and is back in the water. She has been painted a very attractive Blue and some of the ropes have been replaced. She now bears the name of the SEA CADETS on her sides and wherever she goes will show the Sea Cadet Flag.

Look forward to seeing her on these pages throughout the season of 2004.
